Medical thesis training program

All of our medical students start their medical thesis with a intensive 8 day seminar with theoretical and hands-on bench-side teaching.

Day 1: Safety – Introduction – DNA Amplification, expression of genes
8.00 – 9.30 Safety – Mr. Jenne (Arbeitssicherheit)

9.30 – 10.00 Introduction 

DNA amplification, expression of genes

10.00-12.00 PCR, RT-PCR, generation of RNA, in vivo protein expression, model systems (C. elegans, Xenopus) 

13.00-17.00 Generation of RNA, C. elegans, Xenopus model systems

   
Day 2: Histology
8:00-10:00 Detection of antigens in tissues
10:00-17:00 In situ hybridization tissue section, embedding, staining procedures 

   
Day 3: Microscopy
8:00-10.00 Introduction to light, fluorescence, widefield and confocal microscopy
10:00-12:00 Immunoflourescence Staining
13:00-17:00 Hands on widefield and confocal microscope
   
Day 4: Manipulation of DNA
8.00-10.00 DNA, cloning, vectors, plasmid amplification, expression of genes in E. coli
10.00-17.00 Practical exercise: subcloning, transformation, Mini- and Maxi-Preps, generation of recombinant proteins in bacteria

   
Day 5: Cell culture
8.00-10.00 Principles of keeping cells alive in culture, mycoplasm etc.
10.00-17.00 Cell culture, split 293T cells for transfections
   
Day 6: Transfections & Transformation
8:00-10.00 Genetic manipulation of mammalian cells (transfection, transduction, retroviral vectors)
10:00-17.00 Transfection of gfp, transfection of cells for Western blot
   
Day 7: Western Blot
8:00-10.00 Detection of expressed proteins (Western blot, 1D-/2D gels, MS)
10:00-17:00 Cell lysis, Western blotting
   
Day 8: Bioinformatics
9:30-15:00 Webtools, design of PCR primer, sequencing, labbase (Practical exercises)
